In December 1984, the 124 model series marked the arrival of a new generation of mid-range Mercedes-Benz vehicles. Drawing inspiration from the brand’s evolving design and engineering philosophy, it introduced advanced materials and aerodynamic improvements focused on efficiency and usability.

Following its 1993 update, it became the first model series to be officially designated as the E-Class — establishing a name that would define the segment and evolve across generations.

Features such as the trapezoidal boot lid and low loading sill improved accessibility, while giving the car a distinctive and purposeful design that has since become an enduring hallmark of the E-Class.

A key milestone of the W124 was the introduction of the Mercedes-Benz vehicle dynamics concept, integrating systems such as ABS, ASD, ASR and 4MATIC all-wheel drive.

Together, these technologies improved traction, stability and control, representing an important step towards the electronically assisted driving systems that define modern vehicles today.

With over 2.5 million units produced, the W124 became one of the most successful model series in Mercedes-Benz history. Its versatility — spanning saloon, estate, coupé and cabriolet variants — further reinforced its broad appeal.
