The First S-Class. A New Standard Begins.

The First True S-Class (1972)

In September 1972, Mercedes-Benz introduced a new generation of luxury saloons — and for the first time officially named it the S-Class.

Replacing the W108/W109 series, the W116 debuted with the 280 S, 280 SE and 350 SE — establishing a new flagship range for the brand. What had once been a designation became a dedicated model line, defining the S-Class as the benchmark for innovation, comfort and engineering excellence.

A New Standard of Luxury

From its launch, the W116 was conceived as the flagship of the Mercedes-Benz range. Offered with six-cylinder and V8 engines, and later in long-wheelbase (SEL) variants, it delivered enhanced comfort and presence — especially for rear passengers.

With its spacious interior, refined ride and confident design, the W116 redefined expectations of luxury motoring across global markets.

Engineering for Comfort and Control

The W116 introduced significant advancements in chassis engineering. A newly developed double-wishbone front suspension with anti-dive characteristics improved stability and handling, delivering a more composed driving experience.

Combined with a well-balanced rear suspension system, this innovation ensured a smoother ride and set new standards for refinement.

A Pioneer in Automotive Safety

Beyond luxury, the W116 became a milestone in automotive safety. It featured a reinforced passenger cell and energy-absorbing crumple zones, designed to enhance occupant protection.

In 1978, it became the first production car to offer an anti-lock braking system (ABS), allowing drivers to maintain steering control under emergency braking. These innovations went on to shape safety standards across the automotive industry.

Defining the Future of Mercedes-Benz

The W116 did more than introduce a new model — it defined what the S-Class would represent. Combining innovation, safety leadership and uncompromising comfort, it established a blueprint that continues to guide every S-Class today.

More than a flagship, the W116 set a standard for luxury motoring worldwide.
