In March 1991, Mercedes-Benz unveiled a new generation of its flagship S-Class at the Geneva Motor Show. Internally designated the W140, it was developed with a clear ambition: to achieve exceptional aerodynamic performance while maintaining the highest level of everyday practicality.
As the successor to the earlier S-Class generations, the W140 marked a new chapter in luxury motoring — combining advanced engineering with unprecedented refinement.
A Modern Interpretation of a Classic Design
The W140 introduced a new design language for the S-Class. While retaining the iconic proportions and presence, the traditional radiator grille was reinterpreted as an “integrated radiator”, seamlessly blending into the bonnet with a more refined chrome frame.
For the first time, the Mercedes-Benz star was positioned on the bonnet rather than standing above the grille — signalling a subtle but important evolution in design identity.
Comfort Elevated Through Innovation
The W140 set new standards in everyday comfort. Features such as central locking and electrically operated windows were fitted as standard, reflecting a shift towards greater convenience and ease of use.
A key innovation was the introduction of double-glazed soundproofed glazing, the first of its kind in a production passenger car. These windows improved insulation against temperature, noise and condensation, while enhancing cabin serenity and refining the driving experience.
Advanced Engineering for a New Decade
Under the bonnet, the W140 offered a range of advanced powertrains, including a 5.0-litre V8 engine with fully electronic management. This new generation of engines reflected the increasing integration of electronic systems in automotive engineering.
Together with its aerodynamic development and engineering precision, the W140 delivered a level of performance, refinement and stability befitting the flagship of the brand.
The Benchmark of 1990s Luxury
The W140 became known for its uncompromising approach to engineering — often described as a symbol of the era’s pursuit of perfection. It redefined expectations of what a luxury saloon could offer in terms of comfort, technology and build quality.
More than a successor, the W140 carried the S-Class legacy into a new era — setting the benchmark for luxury motoring in the 1990s and beyond
